Dentures in Oman: Types, Costs, and What to Expect in the First Month

Modern dentures are not your grandparent’s pink plastic plates. Here are the four types available in Muscat, what each costs, and the honest adjustment period — including why the first two weeks feel terrible but the next twenty years feel fine.

In short

Standard acrylic complete denture (OMR 200–350 per arch): the traditional pink-base denture, time-tested, lightest, and cheapest. Cast metal partial (OMR 280–450): a metal framework with clasps, for patients with remaining natural teeth — more hygienic and stable than acrylic but less aesthetic. Flexible partial (Valplast, TCS) (OMR 280–450): gum-coloured flexible plastic, almost invisible — best for single/few missing teeth. Implant-retained overdenture (OMR 1,200–1,800): two implants with snap attachments holding a removable denture — the premium option, dramatically better chewing and stability.

The four types, in order of cost

The first two weeks — honest expectations

Days 1–3: gum soreness, excessive saliva production, difficulty pronouncing "s" and "th" sounds, anxiety about slipping. Completely normal. Practice speaking aloud and reading a newspaper out loud — pronunciation adjusts within a week. Days 4–7: the first sore spots appear where the denture is too tight. We adjust in a 15-minute visit — do not suffer through it, come in. Days 8–14: eating improves, starting with soft foods cut small. By day 14 most patients eat most foods. Full confidence with new dentures typically arrives at week 6–8.

Relines, rebase, and remake — what they mean

Gums shrink after tooth loss — 25% in the first year, then more gradually. A denture that fit well at fitting will loosen as gums shrink. Reline (OMR 40–70): new soft material added inside the denture to take up the space — usually needed at 6 months and 2 years. Rebase (OMR 90–150): the entire base is replaced while keeping the original teeth. Full remake: needed every 5–7 years on average. Budget for maintenance; a denture is not a one-time purchase.

Implant-retained overdentures — the upgrade worth considering

Two implants in the lower jaw with snap (locator) attachments transform a lower denture from "I can’t eat apples" to "I can eat anything." The denture stays in place when you speak, chew, or laugh. Cost in Muscat: OMR 1,200–1,800 per arch (includes the two implants plus a new denture with attachments). Most satisfied patients are those who tried conventional lower dentures first and hated them — the upgrade experience is dramatic. Upper implant-retained overdentures need four implants and cost more.

How to care for dentures (the real list)

Remove and brush after every meal with a denture brush — not your regular toothbrush, which is too hard. Soak overnight in water or a specialised cleaner (Steradent, Polident); never in hot water, which warps the plastic. Brush your gums and tongue every morning even without natural teeth — prevents infection and keeps the tissue healthy. Annual dental check-up is still essential — for oral cancer screening, denture fit assessment, and any implants. Don’t try to repair a cracked denture with superglue — bring it in.
