Does in-clinic whitening really work in one session?

Yes. A single 45–60 minute Philips Zoom or Opalescence Boost session typically lifts the shade 3–8 tabs on the VITA scale. Results vary based on baseline colour and stain type.

Does whitening damage enamel?

Professional whitening at correct concentration and time does not damage enamel. It temporarily opens enamel pores (which is why sensitivity is common for 24–72 hours), but the enamel remineralises from saliva afterwards.

How long do results last?

12–24 months for most patients. Smokers and heavy coffee/tea drinkers: closer to 12. A take-home tray touch-up every 6 months extends results significantly.

Who should not whiten?

Patients with active decay or leaking fillings, exposed root surfaces from gum recession, heavily restored front teeth (veneers/crowns won’t whiten), under-16s, and pregnant or breastfeeding patients.

Is whitening toothpaste enough?

For surface maintenance after professional whitening, yes. But whitening toothpaste cannot reach internal tooth discolouration — it only polishes surface stains. It is not a substitute for professional whitening.
